Chapter 12
THE MEETING WAS BRIEF, much to Eva’s relief. The layout of the hotel was indeed different, but Eva felt a little claustrophobic and wasn’t too upset when the Minister broke up the meeting early. They were scheduled to meet the Mayor for talks about a sister-state arrangement with Sydney, then lay a wreath at the war memorial for the Australian soldiers who were killed during the war. The stopover at Larissa was scheduled for only two days, but with the cancellation of the meetings in Thessaloniki, the Minister decided to extend it to four. They would then fly to Rome to continue their journey.
Eva sniffed the sweet aroma of baked goodies and smiled. Despina was making her favorite Greek sweet, kadaifi, a flaky pastry with nuts and a rich syrup. She pushed open the kitchen door and stood leaning against the door jamb. Eva had a severe case of deja vu as she watched Despina take the cakes out of the oven. The rain splattering the window brought back memories from the close of the war.
Zoe was angry with Father Haralambos for not wanting to run away to save his life. Eva had just about given up hope and had gone to the church to pray. Now, both were returning to the Muller residence. It had been a cold, wet day and Zoe came in soaked to the skin.
Eva found herself attracted to the fiery young woman, thinking she may have found a kindred spirit in the young woman. They marched into the kitchen to find an angry Despina.
“Oh my God!” Despina cried out as Zoe carried the mud from her boots onto the clean kitchen floor. Her spotless floor was now covered in water and mud. Zoe stood there with a sheepish grin and shrugged.
“Get out of here, NOW! You are…” the housekeeper yelled, stopping in mid-sentence when she saw Eva follow Zoe inside. “Fraulein Muller, I’m sorry…”
“Sorry…” She took off her muddy shoes, threw them out of the kitchen door and looked down to find her white socks were now a mucky brown color.
“Get some hot water prepared for a bath, Despina,” Eva said, ignoring the glare Despina was giving Zoe as they both trudged up the stairs.
It was, indeed, the day Eva had allowed Zoe into her heart and surrendered her soul to the young woman.
“Are you going to stand there holding the door up? I don’t think it will fall down,” Despina grinned, catching Eva with a smile on her face and a faraway look.
“I was thinking of a cold wet night and muddy shoes,” Eva replied, taking a seat near the bench.
“Zoe,” Despina said matter-of-factly and got a chuckle out of the younger woman. Despina took the last batch of sweets out of the oven and set them down on racks to cool. She watched Eva for a few moments. “Are you happy, Eva?”
“Very happy, Despina.”
“So, that little cyclone really did win your heart?” she asked, cupping Eva’s cheek. “You needed someone to take care of you.
